The inaugural running of what today is known as the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 27th June 1866 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 3 yards of The Curragh. There were 38 subscribers (39 according to the 1866 Racing Calendar) at 25 sovereigns each, raising a pot of £421, and the winner was owned by Mr James Cockin, trained by Thomas Cliff and ridden by Charles Maidment. The winner, bred by Daniel Kinsella in Ireland, won by an easy 3 lengths. |
